Choosing the Right Toys for the Right Age for Your Kids

Whether you are looking to buy a toy for your child’s birthday or looking to gift one to a niece or nephew, it is important to consider the impact your choice can have. Buying the right toys for your kids may seem like an easy task, but with the plethora of options available in the market, you might find it a bit daunting.

The first thing you need to consider is the age of the child you are purchasing the toy for. It is highly important that you are choosing the right toys for the right age. Something that a toddler might enjoy would be boring for a big kid, whereas toys suitable for older kids may be too complicated, or even pose a health hazard for younger ones.

This is why we have created a short and simple guide with tips for choosing toys for your kids that are age-appropriate and fun.

1. Consider The Developmental Stage

When choosing age-appropriate toys for kids, think about what features of the toy correspond with which developmental milestones. Even though this seems like it would take tons of research, all you have to do is be intuitive.

For example, if you consider buying a toy slide for the child, think about all the ways it can help them grow. Climbing the steps would promote overall coordination and depth perception, whereas the adrenaline rush in sliding down would help them become more confident and fearless.

Even though all our toys are labeled with a suitable age range to help you choose, you can keep your child and their milestones in mind when making your purchase.

2. Don’t Obsess Over Technology

Exposure to technology is vital for our kids since it is the digital age and they need to learn how to navigate it. However, early exposure to electronic games and screen time can be counterproductive for your child’s learning. Experts suggest that constantly engaging younger kids in overcomplicated toys can hinder their ability to explore the world around them.

When choosing the right toys for the right age, keep in mind how technologically advanced you want the toy to be. Whilst older children may enjoy video games more, it is imperative to give your younger kids hands-on toys that challenge their motor skills. A strong foundation in active play leads to healthier habits in the future.

If buying a gift for someone else’s children, also keep in mind what their parents might think of an electronic toy. They might be trying to cut down on screen time and would probably appreciate battery-operated ride-on cars or even manual ride-on toys instead of an android tablet.

3. Keep Your Budget in Mind

More expensive doesn’t necessarily mean better. As a mother, I know that all my child needs, is the right setting and she can engage herself for hours on end! This is because children love it when something challenges their imagination. Instead of buying expensive, branded toys that are heavily advertised in YouTube videos, try to invest in something that can be used in multiple play-pretend scenarios.

Choosing the right toys for the right age when you talk about play pretend can be a bit tricky. But if you pick something like a ride-on car, there are endless possibilities. The child can pretend to be an ice cream man, a police officer, a race car driver, and more!

This will not only help you cut down on the expense of buying several small toys that your kids get bored of in a few days, but also give your kids the opportunity to create irreplaceable memories.

4. Shop Responsibly

Branded imported toys are great but expensive. When choosing toys for your kids, try to invest in local brands that produce high-quality toys but are priced more reasonably. You will not only be gifting your child hours of fun but also helping the local economy.

Similarly, always recycle or donate old toys, before purchasing new ones. This will help your child understand, from a young age, the importance of charity, sustainability as well as not develop a habit of hoarding.

We hope you liked our tips for choosing toys for your kids. If you have any tips of your own to add to this, we would love to hear them in the comments!
