How to Encourage Your Child to Play Sports

Have you ever wondered how to encourage your child in sports? Encouraging your child to participate in sports is an absolute necessity. Sport is not only directly connected with physical fitness but also with good mental health. Physical activities are known to have a powerful and positive impact on mental wellbeing as well as on certain mental illnesses. Participation in sports, exercises and regular physical activities also increases self-esteem and reduces stress and anxiety in growing children. The thing is, you must have often wondered how to motivate your child in sports because children can get a little cranky when we enforce certain things or opinions on them especially in today’s age, where screen time is every kid’s first priority and any other physical activity comes second. Here are some activities that would help improve their mental and physical fitness altogether:

Instill it through the screen time:

Encourage them through the medium they already prefer. Watch different sports with them, play different video games having sports with them. This way they will develop an interest in sports and games and will be encouraged to play in real life too because of the familiarity they already had with the game through multimedia. 

Set the examples:

Kids do what they see. They reflect everything you do, that is why it is often recommended to start teaching your kids at an early age. Be it studies, a language, a hobby, a habit, when they learn early, they learn it right and for the longest and efficient time. Even if a kid is lazy, you can motivate a lazy kid in sports by setting the right examples. So, know that whatever you’re doing, you’re setting an example for your kid. If you’re being a couch potato and sitting and eating around all day your kid is going to adapt that and will do that later in their life. Therefore, set the right examples by being active and sporty yourself.

Play sports together:

Engagement is encouragement when it’s about sports. Engage your kids and play sports together. Because their earliest memory will help them incorporate the habit of playing sports in their life. Play baseball, soccer, cricket, or any sport in which you and your kid click together, and half of your job will already be done. 

Make it a group activity:

Play together during family get-to-gathers, play at parties, invite your kid’s friends and include them in your sporting activities. When you treat sports as a culture when your kids are growing up you encourage a kid to play sports wholeheartedly. 

Make little games for the little you:

Start early with the sports. You cannot teach a 5-year-old how to play cricket so instead of pushing your child what you can do easily is that you can make little games out of the sports, like cricket involves throwing, so you can play throw and catch with your kids. It involves running, so you can race with them. Like this breakup of the overall activity into tiny little components out of the sports will help your child to catch up and this will allow you to start incorporating them into your kid’s playtime routine to encourage them to play sports.

An active life is a healthy life and sports must be integrated in every child’s life at an early age to ensure the mental, emotional and physical well being of them.
