How to Keep Your Kids Safe on the Internet

Internet is a fun place. One gets to learn a lot from different platforms that are available over the internet. It’s a great source of entertainment and infotainment altogether and provides tremendous learning opportunities while being a dark space for kids at the same time.

Kids don’t know which way to go, which link to click, which video to watch, what to share online, and what not. They don’t have the right direction to follow when they are wandering in the digital streets and this can turn out to be very dangerous.

With all sorts of cyber-crimes happening all around the world, we should be super cautious about internet safety for children.

Here are some internet safety tips for parents on how to keep your children safe online:
• Don’t be hesitant to discuss your kid’s online activities with them
• Monitor their screens – keep them close when they are using the internet
• Make the most out of parental controls
• If your child has cyber friends, get to know them
• Teach your children about location controls
• Keep track of their screen time
• Be responsible when it comes to social media usage

Don’t be hesitant to discuss your kid’s online activities with them

Teach your kids about the pros and cons of the internet early in their lives, because it’s better to be safe than sorry. Discuss their online activities with them openly. Ask them what games do they play, what type of content they are into, their choice of videos, songs, and the apps they like to use. And if you find anything concerning about their choices, calmly discuss the potential threats with them and make them understand why you’re asking them to avoid the said thing.

Monitor their screens

Connect their screens with your television. Ask them to watch whatever they want but in the living room TV, play their favorite games on the big screen as well, this way you will be able to see what they are up to. When they are using other apps or social media, make sure you’re near them to monitor their activities.

Make the most out of parental controls

Nowadays almost all devices and apps come with parental control. Make the best use of it and control the exposure of online activities of your kids.

If your child has cyber friends, get to know them

These days it’s pretty common to have internet friends. When kids play virtual games, they end up becoming friends. But you never know who is on the other side of the screen. Get to know about their friends and what do they sound like, if there is anything concerning, take immediate action.

Teach your children about location controls

Different platforms require our permission to turn on our device’s location. Teach them to always respond no to such pop-ups unless you give them a go-ahead.

Keep track of their screen time

Give them a non-negotiable fixed window of time for all their online activities, and be strict about it. Usually, 2-3 hours are more than enough according to the experts.

Be responsible when it comes to social media usage

You must be a user of social media. You have to be a responsible contributor to the online space and whenever you come across any problematic content you must report it.

These are some steps on how to keep your kids safe on the internet. Follow these to create a healthy and safe cyber-space for your kids. In this age, the internet can be a very dark place but at the same time it is crucial to use it too, you cannot avoid its usage, so it’s better to make it safe for your kids.
