How to discipline a child?

This is an old-age question that has been concerning parents all over the world. There has been an ongoing debate for generations regarding the most effective parenting methods for their children and what are the best ways to discipline a child. Over the years, parents have tried many tactics like spanking, time-outs, harmful yelling, counting to 3 or even rewarding behavior. The list is endless. While some methods may work, others are failing terribly. In today’s time, positive parenting methods are growing in popularity. This has been rooted in heavily researched practices and sound science.
The 5 main ways to discipline children include;

Give them attention

kids need attention; it is as simple as that. If we don’t give them positive attention, children are likely to seek out this attention however they can, even if it’s negative attention. This will lead them to push our buttons with behavior that we consider negative. This does not necessarily mean that parents have to be by their children’s side. Take the time to spend some one-on-one time with them daily, without any distractions. This will reap significant rewards in terms of their behavior. This can include reading with them or playing a game they like.

Take the time to train

When thinking about how to discipline a toddler, one should remember the root meaning of the words guide, inform, instruct and teach. The focus should be on helping them make better choices by modeling the correct response and behavior. If your toddler is having a problem sharing or hitting other children. Instead of sending them to time out, the ideal step to take would be to diffuse the situation and show them the right way they could respond. Another fun thing to do would be to switch roles and pretend to be a kid, allowing them to direct you to make better choices.

Set limits and stay firm with them

Another question that concerns parents are how to discipline a child for misbehaving at school. While at home, parents may be able to keep a close watch on their children. This, however, may not be possible at school. It is important to be consistent and emphasize the importance of structure. When expectations are communicated clearly, kids have a framework within which they work even when at school. This does not mean that one goes overboard with hundreds of rules. Instead focus should be on the important ones. Being clear on ground rules and the consequences and also going through with the consequences reminds children that their bad behavior will not be rewarded even if their parents are not with them at that particular time.

Discuss what needs to be changed

Once the consequences have been administered, the most important step is to discuss with the children. This includes taking them to a private place and talk about it. Parents should start by asking the children why they think they had been punished and what they could have done right. Make sure the children understand the concept between action and consequences.

Offer to forgive and reconcile

Once the children understand what they have done, the focus should be on healing. Teach children to ask for forgiveness and then give them forgiveness. Children need to know that everything is okay. This should be followed by physical affection. These are some great tips that will help you learn how to discipline a child.
